> Department of Human Development Professor Nathan Fox is appointed a Distinguished University Professor - the highest academic honor the university bestows. He was also elected as a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) - the world's largest general federation of scientists.

> The College receives a $500K gift from an anonymous donor to support merit-based scholarships.

> Human Development Professor Melanie Killen is named a 2008-09 University of Maryland Distinguished Scholar-Teacher. Killen is a co-developer of an anti-violence video game, Cool School, designed to teach children how to deal with conflicts peacefully.

> The College introduces the Support Program for Advancing Research and Collaboration (SPARC) to encourage research growth within its departments by providing an additional avenue of funding for faculty and graduate students.

> Christine A. Courtois (Counseling and Personnel Services, Ph.D.,'79; MA '73) is named the College's Distinguished Alumna for 2008. The award is presented at the University of Maryland Alumni Association Awards Gala held on April 12, 2008.

> The College ranks among the top 25 colleges of education according to U.S. News & World Report. All of its ranked programs and departments are listed in the top 15, with five programs in the top 10. The Department of Counseling and Personnel Services ranks first in the nation for the ninth consecutive year.

> Donna Wiseman, Ph.D., is named dean of the College of Education effective May 1, 2008.

> Alumna Carolyn Gurtz (Elementary Education, '70) wins the million-dollar top prize at the 2008 Pillsbury Bake-Off contest for her Double-Delight Peanut Butter Cookies.

> At its fifth annual awards ceremony on May 9, the College of Education recognizes eight outstanding faculty, staff, and students for their exceptional accomplishments, significant contributions, and years of committed service to the college. The Honorees were Assistant Professor Tara Brown-L'Bahy, Dr. Jim Greenberg, Dr. Christy Tirrell-Corbin, Jeanie Yerby, Caroline Scott, Justin Fincher, Jennifer Stepanekand Professor Hedwig Teglasi

> In fiscal year 2008 the College attracts $15.7 million in externally funded research and sponsored programs.

> Professor Gregory Hancock is appointed chair of the Department of Measurement, Statistics, and Evaluation effective July 1, 2008.

> Professor of Practice Carol Sheffey Parham, Department of Education Leadership, Higher Education and International Education, is named chair of the University of Maryland President's Commission on Women's Issues for 2008-2010.

> Professor and Distinguished Scholar-Teacher Patricia Alexander of the Department of Human Development is selected as the new holder of the Jean Mullan Professorship of Literacy.

> Professor Margaret McLaughlin is appointed Interim Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Education.

> The College of Education hosts its second annual Back-to-School Media Day on Sept. 4, 2008.

> Associate Professor Linda Valli is appointed interim chair of the Department of Curriculum and Instruction.

> Professor Susan Komives, Department of Counseling and Personnel Services, is named president of the Council for the Advancement of Standards in Higher Education.

> In support of its vision of internationalization, the College establishes the Office of International Initiatives.

> At its annual Alumni Awards Ceremony in November 2008, the College of Education Alumni Chapter and Phi Delta Kappa recognizes 13 distinguished individuals in the following award categories:

The following faculty members retire from the College during 2008:

-- Professor Martin L. Johnson, Office of the Dean and Department of Curriculum and Instruction (36 years).

-- Professor Emeritus Charles H. Flatter, Department of Human Development (43 years).

-- Professor Ruth Fassinger, Department of Counseling and Personnel Services (20 years).

-- Professor Chan Dayton, Department of Measurement, Statistics, and Evaluation (45 years).

Each retiree was honored with a Governor's Citation in recognition of their many years of dedicated service to the College of Education and the University of Maryland.

> We Remember...
The College marks the passing of the following colleagues in 2008:

-- Constance Herreshoff Gordon (Ph.D., '83) alumna, retired faculty member of the Department of Curriculum and Instruction, as well as coordinator of Instructional Computing in the Educational Technology Services unit passes away on Jan. 31, 2008.

-- Phillip Weaver, former professor in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction, passes away in December 2008.

> An anonymous donor establishes the Clarence A. Newell Award for Distinguished Service to Public Education in honor of retired professor Clarence Newell. Patricia P. Green (B.S., '71; M.A. '77; Ph.D. '94) is named the inaugural recipient.
