> The State Board for Higher Education designates the College Park campus as the major research/graduate facility for the University of Maryland.

> The College receives two three-year federal grants, known as the Dean's Mainstreaming Grant (covering the period from 1978 to 1984) designed to provide training to personnel serving handicapped individuals.

> Funded by a small federal grant from the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare (1978 to 1982), the College produces a series of six videotapes titled Mosaic: America's Ethnic Heritage, documenting ethnic diversity in the United States. The series was shown on PBS and in the College's courses. It is part of the permanent collection of the Ethnic Studies Clearinghouse in Boulder, Colorado.

> Joseph Alexander Wiseman , retired head of the Graduate Program at Bowie State University and the first African-American to receive a doctorate from College Park, passes away.
