1944> In March 1944, President Byrd approves a return to the semester system. > Dean Arnold Joyal suggests to President Byrd the establishment of a centralized "General Extension College" to coordinate the University's extension offerings. This idea would lead to the formation of University College. > Harold R.W. Benjamin serves as major in the Intelligence Division of the U.S. Army. Faculty member Harold Hand was the headquarters orientation officer for whole Middle East theater. > The Campus Reading Clinic enjoys enormous success. There is an overall improvement in reading skills in 70 percent of the percentiles. > The College meets with the American Council on Education and compiles a guidance resource providing an overview of higher education in America and geared towards returning servicemen affected by the Service Men's Training Act. > The College initiates discussion on the establishment of an undergraduate Nursing Education program. > The College co-sponsors an Institute of Professional Relations on July 20 with the Maryland State Teachers Association, the National Education Association, and State Congress of Parents & Teachers. The purpose of the Institute is to improve links between schools and communities and developing professional organizations. |
